To the people of the Comoros, a small island nation in the western Indian Ocean, preserving marine habitats is vital for job security, food, and long-term sustainability. Understanding the ocean’s importance begins with education, ensuring that opportunities for learning and research are accessible to all. With the establishment of the new Marine Sciences Laboratory at the University of Comoros, opportunities for women in ocean science are both vital and expanding.
In this film, we hear from Amina and Ramona, two scientists on the First Descent: Comoros expedition. They are helping to produce a critical baseline survey of the waters surrounding the Comoros and are supporting the collection of specimens for species discovery. This work provides a vital reference bank for the nation’s marine biodiversity. Nekton’s team collaborated with Comorian researchers to explore local ecosystems and engage in a knowledge exchange of key skills, empowering them to continue studying and protecting their own marine environment.
