Voice of the Comoros: Mangroves of the Comoros: Restoring “Our Rampart”

02/02/2026

What can the deep ocean tell us about the future of sharks in the Comoros?

Dr. Andilyat Mohamed is leading a mission to restore the mangrove ecosystems of Coelacanth National Park on Grand Comore Island, Comoros. With over 16 years of expertise in Comorian plant formations, she has spent the last decade shifting her focus from the land to the delicate intersection of sea and shore, specialising in the algae and seagrasses that keep these key ecosystems alive.

But as development and climate change accelerate across the archipelago, these ecosystems are under threat. Dr. Mohamed warns that rising erosion and habitat degradation are stripping the islands of their natural defenses. Without these mangroves, the coastlines are left vulnerable, and the biodiversity they cradle faces an uncertain future.

For her, rebuilding these vital barriers, “Our Rampart” isn’t just a scientific goal, it’s an imperative for survival.

As a university professor, Dr. Mohamed is cultivating the next generation of conservationists, bridging the gap between the classroom and the coast.
