The Dasya baillouviana and D. cryptica complexes in Bermuda with three additional new species from the archipelago.

Overview

Summary

A molecular study on red algae of the genus Dasya off Bermuda has identified two new species within the D. cryptica species complex: D. orae, found in shallower euphotic zones, and D. bathypelagica, in deeper mesophotic waters. Additionally, what was previously identified as D. baillouviana in Bermuda has been reclassified as D. hibernae, closely related to D. pedicellata from New England and New York. Molecular and morphological analyses clarified that inshore specimens thought to be D. cryptica were actually D. orae, while the deep-water D. bathypelagica also represented a new species within the D. cryptica complex. Further genetic studies showed that D. hibernae is distinct from D. pedicellata, prompting the reinstatement of D. pedicellata and uncovering previously undescribed species within the D. baillouviana complex in the western Atlantic. This study also found that the genus Rhodoptilum is synonymous with Dasya, reinstating D. plumosa, and concluded that Dasya collinsiana should be moved to the genus Dasysiphonia due to its genetic relation to the Dasysiphonia lineage.
