Voice of the Comoros: Where Are Comoros’ Sharks?

18/11/2025

Joshua Rambahiniarison from CORDIO, working within the Nekton First Descent: Comoros mission, is leading the first comprehensive survey of shark and ray populations in the Comoros. Using Pelagic BRUVs at sites such as Raya Bank, he has conducted dozens of deployments over six months; yet has not recorded a single shark. While fishers still report occasional encounters, Josh fears that the absence of sightings could mean that some shark populations are now functionally extinct in Comoros, as seen in other parts of East Africa.

This film connects Josh’s scientific investigation with first-hand accounts from local fishers, who describe certain species, such as Oceanic Whitetips, as ‘shepherds’ guiding other fish toward the islands.

Despite the sobering data, the film also reflects the growing willingness among fishers to adapt their practices and support science-based protection and management for the future of their ocean.
