The Indian Ocean is currently the least scientifically understood and least protected ocean on Earth. It is warming three times faster than the Pacific Ocean and faces escalating threats from pollution, rapid coastal development, and unsustainable exploitation of marine life.
By 2050, this “Ocean of the Future” will be home to half of the world’s population, with an average age under 30.
First Descent: Indian Ocean aims to drive the scientific exploration and sustainable management of this vital ocean.
This series of large-scale programmes is developed in collaboration with Indian Ocean nations, their governments, scientists, media, and civil society partners. Each mission combines three core elements:
All data and discoveries are owned by and vested with the host nation, ensuring local benefits and global impact.
Since its launch with the Comoros (Pathfinder) Mission in 2018, First Descent: Indian Ocean has completed missions in the Seychelles and Maldives, facilitated a Western Indian Ocean Deep-Sea Science Course and MOOC, and driven ongoing knowledge exchange and engagement campaigns.
